When Commercial Glass Doors Break
Glass is the most visible part of a commercial entrance and the most vulnerable. A shattered pane after a break-in leaves the store open. A cracked or fogged pane makes a business look neglected. Loose glass rattles, leaks and eventually breaks. In every case, the fix starts with making the opening safe and secure, then putting the right glass back in.
We replace glass in aluminum storefront doors and frameless all-glass entrance doors across Toronto and the GTA, from same-night board-up to final glazing. Glass work is handled by the same crews that run our commercial door repair in Toronto, so the pivots, closer and lock get checked on the same visit.
Glass Options for Commercial Doors
Tempered glass
Heat-treated safety glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces. Standard on most storefront doors and the quickest to source.
Laminated glass
Two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, it stays in one piece. That makes it much harder to get through during a break-in and keeps the opening closed until replacement. Recommended for street-level retail.
Low-E insulated glass
A sealed double pane with a heat-reflective coating. Reduces heat loss at exterior lobby and office doors and replaces units that have fogged between the panes.
Glass Replacement Cost Guide
| Glass and door type | Typical range (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Tempered glass in an aluminum storefront door | $2,200 - $3,200 |
| Laminated glass in an aluminum storefront door | $2,800 - $4,500 |
| Low-E insulated glass in an exterior door | $3,000 - $5,000 |
| Frameless all-glass door panel | $4,500 - $6,800 |
Ranges only. Size, thickness, lead time and after-hours board-up affect the final number. Your written CAD scope confirms it.
From Broken to Secure to Replaced
On one King West restaurant, the owner woke to a shattered tempered glass entrance after an overnight break-in. The crew boarded the door before the morning prep shift, measured for laminated glass and installed the new pane with a reset closer three days later. The restaurant never closed for service, and the claim was direct-billed.
Glass is set with new gaskets or spline so it sits tight and sealed in the door. Then the closer, pivots or floor spring and the lock are re-adjusted. A pane installed in a door that slams will not last, so the hardware matters as much as the glass.
Safety Glazing
Glass in commercial doors must be safety glazing. Every replacement pane we install meets that requirement, and laminated options add forced-entry resistance on top.
After-Hours Breakage
If a door is broken after hours, call our emergency commercial door repair line. We clear the hazard, board the opening and document everything for the insurer the same night.
Door or Glass?
If the door frame and stiles are sound, glass replacement is all you need. If the stiles are cracked or the door has other problems, a storefront door replacement may be the better spend. For pivots, closers and locks, see storefront door repair.
